Although few teens have tattoos - because most states require parental consent to get them - your child may have thought about getting a tattoo at one time or another.
If the topic is to be discussed at home, it is important to be the clear and objective source of information about tattoos to help your teen make a good and healthy decision.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Clinical Report, "Tattoos, Piercings, and Scarifications in Teens and Young Adults" provides information on tattoo safety and regulations. Teens should be aware of the risks of permanent tattoos and weigh the risks against any perceived benefits of having a tattoo.
The issue of minors - people under 18 in the United States - who want tattoos and parental consent is a hotly debated topic. Laws regarding tattoos can vary from state to state.
At least 45 states have laws that prohibit minors from getting tattoos.
38 states have laws that prohibit tattoos and body piercing by minors without parental consent.
Ironically, states did not have common standards until 1999 when the US National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) published: Art on the Body: A Comprehensive Guide and Model Code. Even with these regulations, 72% of states do not effectively regulate sanitation, training / licensing, and infection control. Training / Bachelor's is the least uniformly regulated item.
Note: It is important for parents to distinguish between "normal body modification" and a body modification that is more dramatic or intense — which is part of non-suicidal self-harm disorder (NSSI).
After choosing or designing the art to be transferred by means of the tattoo, a stencil or template is made or drawn on the skin. The skin is cleaned with an antiseptic and a thin layer of an ointment (such as petroleum jelly) is smeared on the tattoo site.
Permanent tattoos are created with a needle that repeatedly injects the pigmented ink into the skin. Professional tattoo artists use electric motorized machines that hold the needles and pierce the skin thousands of times per minute. The needles are dipped in the ink and then pierce the skin to a depth of a few millimeters. The excreted blood or fluid is cleaned up during the procedure. There are many videos on the internet that explain the safe and permitted methods of tattooing.
Getting a tattoo can take from 15 minutes to several sessions depending on the size and detail of the tattoo that you want. Most people say it hurts. Unfortunately, many tattoos are applied by amateurs - which makes the process more risky and increases the possibility of complications.

Formación de queloides. Las personas que son propensas a la formación de queloides —fibras de tejido de crecimiento excesivo o cicatrices— corren mayor riesgo de sufrir formaciones queloides de un tatuaje. Los queloides se pueden formar en cualquier momento que la piel sea lesionada o traumatizada, y ocurre con más frecuencia como resultado de eliminar un tatuaje.
Enrojecimiento excesivo, sensibilidad en el lugar del tatuaje, sangrado prolongado o cambio en el color de la piel en el área del tatuaje son todos señales de infección. Si este es el caso o si existen otros problemas, tales como hinchazón excesiva o sangrado, llame a su pediatra.
